Thinking Points
The word ‘شُغُل’ – ‘shugul’ – means something which keeps a person busy; the word ‘فَاكِهُونَ’ – ‘fākhihūn’ comes from the word ‘فَكَاهَة’ – ‘fakāhah’ and it means speech which brings about happiness.
The word ‘أَرَائِكَ’ – ‘arāʾik’ is the plural of ‘أَرِيكَةَ’ – ‘arīka’ – and it refers to an ornate throne or couch which is in the room of the bride.
One of the things which is seen in Paradise is that there is peace (salām) from all directions:
1. God will address the people with the phrase ‘salām’ – as we read: سَلاَمٌ قَولاً مِنْ رَّبِّ رَّحِيمِ;
2. The angels will also convey their ‘salām’ by saying: وَ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ يَدْخُلُونَ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ كُلِّ باَبٍ سَلاَمٌ عَلَيْكُمْ;
3. The people of Paradise will also greet one another with the phrase, ‘salām’: تَحِيَّتُهُمْ فِيهاَ سَلاَمٌ.
Take Away Messages:
1. In Paradise, there is no concept of being ‘lazy’ – the word used in the verse, ‘شُغُلٍ’ – ‘shughulin’ – with the nunation (tanwīn) at the end of it and it being an indefinite noun (nakira) gives it the meaning of some activity whose depths are unknown and is something which is indescribable.
2. In Paradise, there is no grief or sorrow.
3. In Paradise, there is life without death; health without sickness; youth without aging; respect without humiliation; blessings with no effort; existence without annihilation; happiness without anger; and fondness without fear.
4. In Paradise, there is no loneliness.
5. The places of abode in Paradise grant comfort and tranquility.
6. Sitting on couches and chairs is favoured to sitting on the floor.
7. The best types of foods exist in Paradise – in the verse, the word ‘فَاكِهَةٌ’ – ‘fākihatun’ – is mentioned as an indefinite noun (nakira) to act is an indication that people will be met with its fruits.
8. There are no limits in Paradise – the word ‘يَدَّعُونَ’ – ‘yaddaʿūn’ means that whatever the person wants and desires will be given to them.
9. The Resurrection is a physical event – the words used in this verse such as fruits and spouse show us that the Resurrection will take place with these same physical bodies which we currently have.
10. It is in Paradise in which the people will experience the pleasure and peace with the greatness of God.
11. Receiving peace from God, is a wish and desire of the people of Paradise.
