(11 Aug 2016) On the eastern edge of the city of Taiz, the city's Popular Resistance Militias who are loyal to the internationally-recognised government of Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi are continuing their fight against rebel Shiite Houthis militias.
Although the frontline hasn't moved for months, gunfire can be heard constantly and damaged buildings show the effects of artillery fire, some still smoking from fires.
The militiamen, who are allied to the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis across the country, have taken up strategic positions inside damaged buildings.
Eastern Taiz has seen near continuous fighting for over a year and has all but been abandoned by civilians.
The recent fighting comes on the heels of failed UN peace talks in Kuwait on Saturday between Yemen's internationally-recognised government and the country's Shiite rebels.
Taiz has seen some of the worst fighting and shortages recently due to a double blockade, one layer enforced on large parts of the country by the Saudi Coalition, and another by the Houthis in and around the city itself.
The current blockade of the city has led to fuel, food, and medicine shortages.
Yemen's three-year war pits Yemen's Shiite rebels known as Houthis and forces loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh against a Saudi-led coalition that backs the internationally-recognised President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and his allies.
Over the past year, the war has killed more than 9,000 people, displaced 2.3 million, and destroyed much of Yemen's infrastructure.
Yemen's SABA news agency, which is now under Houthi control, said dozens of airstrikes led by the Saudi-coalition pounded Taiz earlier this week along with the capital Sanaa, the Houthis' northern stronghold of Saada, the western city of Jouf, and the Red Sea ports of Makha and Houdeida earlier this week.
