(7 May 2018) TINY WELSH JEANS COMPANY TRANSFORMED BY MARKLE SPARKLE
A tiny Welsh denim company has been swamped by orders from across the world after Meghan Markle wore its brand of jeans when she visited Cardiff with Prince Harry.
Based in Cardigan on the western tip of Wales, Hiut Denim makes just 150 pairs of jeans a week, all produced by hand. It employs around 20 people.
But Meghan's decision to wear Hiut has transformed the company, which now has a three-month waiting list for orders, and is about to move to bigger premises.
The so-called 'Markle Sparkle' could transform the prospects for Cardigan, too.
The town was devastated when its main employer, a mass-production jeans factory, closed down in 2002.
Four hundred people - ten per cent of Cardigan's population - lost their jobs.
Hiut's co-founder David Hieatt says the surge in sales has enabled the company to take on more staff.
He says his long-term aim is to expand to the point where all 400 jobs that were lost can be returned to the town.
