Here’s a question I often hear from my patients who smoke — can vaping help you quit smoking?
So, we know that vaping nicotine e-cigarettes is addictive and the chemicals in that vapor are harmful. But vapes are less addictive and seem to be less harmful than tobacco cigarettes.
Cigarettes are addictive mainly because of the nicotine but are harmful because of the thousands of other chemicals that damage our lungs and cause various diseases such as cancer.
So, might it make sense to get that nicotine from vapes instead? In other words, can e-cigarettes effectively reduce harm by helping you to quit smoking, by swapping that smoking habit for a vaping habit? Let’s get into it.

What is The Feed with Dr. G?
“Science provides the knowledge we need to improve our health – but it’s also science’s job to make sure that knowledge is accessible to everyone.” – Dr. Samir Gupta
Nothing matters more than our health. And science is the key to understanding and maximizing our health and wellness. Yet new studies are reported in the news every day, and it seems impossible to keep up and figure out what’s important. At the same time, science is too often presented in a traditional style that’s unnecessarily complex and hard to understand.
As both a doctor and a scientist, my mission is to find fresh approaches to make science clear, transparent, and easy to understand (=obvious!) – for everyone. In our digital world, The Feed is built to keep people engaged and informed around the latest topics and newest science in health and medicine, and to empower them to separate fact from fiction.
