Historically, Jesus Christ has often been referred to as the Redeemer who gives us Redemption.
Where does the title "Redeemer" come from and what does it mean?
We hear the word redeemer so often in reference to Christ that it is easy to overlook the word's more basic meaning.
To redeem simply means to "buy back."
You might redeem an item at the grocery store with a coupon. You might redeem a prize for tickets you won at the arcade. You might redeem a debt you owed for a house or car.
The word redeem has also come to be used in regaining someone's reputation for past mistakes. You can "redeem yourself" by proving you are trustworthy after losing trust, for example.
But what does redeem mean in terms of our salvation?
Jesus redeems us by freeing us from death and slavery to sin. He "buys back" our souls from the fallen state of sin.
Through this redemption we regain our honor. We are no longer sinners, but now we are redeemed.
It's also important to remember how Jesus "buys back" or pays off our debt.
Jesus suffered and died for us. He gave his life to buy back our freedom from sin. He paid a debt he didn't owe and we couldn't pay.
