Akiba Kiwelowicz Rubinstein was a Polish chess player who lived from 1 December 1880 to 14 March 1961. He is regarded as one of the greatest players who never won the World Chess Championship. Rubinstein was named International Grandmaster at its inception in 1950.
In his youth, he defeated famous players José Raul Capablanca and Carl Schlechter, and he was slated to compete for the World Chess Championship against Emanuel Lasker in 1914, but the match was canceled owing to the onset of World War I. After the war, he was unable to constantly recreate the same shape, and his latter life was plagued by mental illness.
