Is there anything more English than people playing cricket in front of a grand country house on a summer’s afternoon?
Currently occupied by a top-ranked private school, Stowe House and estate have a rich history and have been associated with several prominent figures, including the Temple-Grenville family and the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos.
Partially designed by William Kent (one of the leading architects of the early 18th century), Stowe House is primarily designed in the neoclassical architectural style, characterized by its grandeur, symmetry, and use of classical elements such as columns, pediments, and porticos. This style was intended to evoke the grandeur of ancient Greek and Roman architecture.
Sir John Vanbrugh (Castle Howard & Blenheim Palace) was also responsible for some of the build, with legendary Neoclassical architect Robert Adam working on the classical interiors in the latter part of the 18th century.
In addition to the spectacular classical architecture, Stowe also features extensive gardens - one of the finest 18th century landscapes in Britain! You might recognise the landscaped gardens from many of the external scenes of Netflix’s Bridgerton.
