How to grow and bloom the Glory lilies, Gloriosa superba, in the UK? It is not that difficult after all. Gloriosa superba, also known as Gloriosa rotschildiana as well as Glory Lily, Flame Lily, Fire Lily, Gloriosa Lily, Climbing Lily or Creeping Lily, is one of the most exotic looking flowers you can bloom in your garden if you live in tropical, subtropical or temperate zones as long as you place the tubers in a frost free place during winter if you live in a climate with prolonged frost, or areas with very wet winters and occasional frosts such as several areas in the UK; the Glory Lilies are fully hardy only in USDA zone 10 and 11 (even if some gardeners have been able to cultivate it in zone 9 and 8, mulching the area where Gloriosa tubers were planted, but I have never tried and I strongly recommend to keep it in a frost free area from first to the last date of frost). Its name Gloriosa superba originates from the Latin words "Gloriosus" meaning "Glorious" and "Superbus" meaning "superb, splendid", definitely a name very well suited to this plant for its absolutely stunning flowers. Glory lily flowers are some of the strangest and weirdest flowers of my garden, so bizarre because so strikingly shaped, with reflexed petals with undulated margins that in the wild species as well as many cultivars are very bright yellow and red or yellow and orange, giving an overall appearance of a flame burning from the centre of the flower, however completely yellow varieties as well as lime yellow and striped are also available in cultivation. Glory lilies bloom usually between June and August, the flowers unfortunately are not fragrant and this is the reason that I planted my Gloriosa superba tubers together with some sweet peas, that also like to cling on other plants and supports, but are also incredibly fragrant so I have a combination of gorgeous colours and shape from the glory lilies and an amazing fragrance produced by the sweet peas. Glory Lilies can be up to 4 metres tall but usually don't exceed 2 metres. Gloriosa superba is a wonderful plant that thrives in full sun but can adapt to partial shade and needs very well drained soil, and needs a support to which to cling and climb on, as their other names, Climbing Lily, suggests; in particular, I used cones for climbing over an my Gloriosa superba love them as well as my sweet peas, as you can see in the video. I also made a video about how to plant the tubers of the Glory Lilies, and you can watch it by clicking on this link [ Ссылка ] .
