When Fareeha Anjum came to Australia she knew nobody. Now she works in a garden set up to help new Australians meet people, build confidence and learn horticultural skills too.


“At the heart of it is helping new Australians from a migrant and refugee background to feel that sense of belonging,” says Mount Druitt Ethnic Commnuities Agency (MECA) manager Daniel Gobena.

MECA moved to these new premesis in 2019 and caseworker Yousef Abou Ammar helped get the garden up and growing.

Dany Boulus teaches the horticulture program: “It’s about building confidence in people to lead to more opportunities, but students get as much out of it from the social connections as from growing plants.”
