A sudden military drill launched by China around Taiwan on Saturday is winding up the tension. China sent dozens of ships and planes for exercises in what it calls "combat readiness", saying it wanted to send a stern warning to separatists.
Taiwan's defence ministry says it detected more than 40 Chinese aircraft and eight ships crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait.
China has vowed to take any necessary measures to safeguard national sovereignty. It comes after Taiwanese vice president William Lai, returned home on Friday, after passing through the US on a trip to Paraguay.
