Peter Haddock talks to Clare Hatton, Director of Operations for Employment and Skills at the West Midlands Combined Authority, who is determined to help.
They both recently attended a special #womeninconstruction taster Saturday event, put on by the Flannery Plant Hire and Balfour Beatty plc. Flannery Director Paul Allman led the event at its Operator Skills Hub.
Clare: "We need to do more to attract women into this sector, but we won't achieve this kind of change this kind of investment in the region without real partnership.
And what we see here with Flannery, Balfour Beatty and the associations they have made with some of our funded colleges and training providers is the ability to train people in the jobs we need and get the skills they need.
"Thanks to devolution in the West Midlands and our Mayor Andy Street, we have control of the £140m adult education budget. This means we can direct this money to the things that matter and the things that change lives.
"It's all about helping our employers get the best people on site, and finding more Women to join the industry is a big part of that."
With HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd, in particular, creating thousands of jobs, there is a real opportunity for people from all backgrounds in the region to start a new career and upskill themselves for the future.
So why not have a chat with some Women at the weekend and let them know about the great jobs and careers available. If you want to get in touch with the Operator Skills Hub team or just want to find out more, visit www.operatorskillshub.com
