This week I want to share with you how to save tomato seeds through the process of fermentation. This is simple to do, takes a few days and a little time, but in the end you will be able to save your heirloom tomato seeds through the winter without fear of dreaded mold which can damage the seeds and inhibit germination.
Tomato seeds can be saved in more than one way. I have seen people dehydrate the tomatoes and retrieve the seeds, I have seen them simply rub the cut tomato on a paper towel and allow the seeds to dry. This process is the most involved but gives you the best way to avoid molding.
You can even plant the seeds immediately after fermenting them, you don't have to dry them out or wait for anything, you can just pop them into the dirt and they will grow. I like to save the seeds over the winter, so I won't be planting all my seeds right away, but I may start a few to determine viability and success rate and maybe to get some fall tomatoes!
