Religious persecution is on the rise, and we must speak out against it or it may flourish! Those words were spoken by the chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom today. A hearing was held on Capitol Hill to highlight the worsening conditions for all faiths around the world. Subcommittee chair, Republican Congressman Chris Smith says half of the world's population are not able to practice their faith freely, many are brutally attacked, tortured, jailed or even slaughtered for their beliefs. Congressman Smith says the State Department must bring either tougher sanctions, better monitoring or regime changes. Experts testified North Korea topped the list, as the most hostile place for Christians, where even owning a Bible is a serious crime and will be severely punished, followed by Somalia and Yemen. A country were Catholics are seeing increased persecution is Nigeria, where over 50,000 Christians have been killed over the past 15 years by Islamist militants and another 18,000 churches burned. Capitol Hill Correspondent, Erik Rosales reports.
