Just as “Jewelry” was YOD’s tribute to his Jewish background and upbringing, “Dump YOD: Krutoy Edition” is the embodiment of Your Old Droog’s full embrace and appreciation of his Ukrainian roots and identity as an immigrant in America. This tribute to his culture is heavily emphasized in every aspect of this album, from the track names, the album cover, the lyrical content, the production and the “interludes”. YOD even goes the extra mile and proceeds to rap an entire song in Russian. His dedication to his culture is on full display during the entirety of this project 39 minute project.
While YOD continues to showcase his talent as a revered underground rapper, showcasing his renowned technical abilities over and over again, it’s the personal recollections as an Eastern European immigrant that leave an imprint on the listener. His tales of growing up in Brooklyn as an outsider are thoughtful, detailed and profound, shedding further light into how determined YOD was to become the highly skilled and esteemed rapper that he is today. The beats that are provided on this project set the scene perfectly for the embrace of Eastern European culture. The mostly drumless loops manufactured from none other than argov give the album a genuine old-time, nostalgic feeling that sounds native to Eastern European culture. While there isn’t an extremely introspective concept in this album, this project is a beautiful example of fully embracing one’s culture through music in a creative and wholehearted way.
