The Greek Orthodox Church commemorates the Second Sunday of Luke on September 30th (2023) with the Gospel reading from Luke 6:31-36, also known as the “Golden Rule”, a call for us to treat others with kindness and compassion. In short, people should treat others as they would like to be treated themselves. This means that people should be kind, forgiving, and compassionate towards others, even if they do not agree with them or if they have wronged them in some way.
The Gospel reading also calls for people to love their enemies and to do good to those who hate them. This is a very challenging teaching, but it is one that is central to the Orthodox Christian faith. By loving our enemies and doing good even to those who hate us, we can eliminate barriers and construct bridges of understanding and compassion to create a more peaceful world.
