Powerlifters arch their backs when doing the bench press. The bigger and stronger the arch, the bigger and stronger their bench press will be. But what about if you're not a powerlifter? What if you're trying to gain muscle size? How does arching affect muscle and chest activation?
In this video, we review a new study by Cudlip and colleagues that measured muscle activation when benching with a neutral spine versus benching with an arched back. We also put those findings into context, trying to figure out how muscle activation may (or may not) translate into actual muscle growth.
