The Calgary Zoo would like to thank the community for their participation in our baby tiger naming contest, launched on our website and Facebook page June 11th. Entrants were able to vote for the names of their choice for the two male cubs. Possible names were chosen by keepers from zoo staff and volunteer submissions with each name having a significant meaning or link to their Russian heritage. All entrants were given a free fountain drink at the zoo, and their names all went into a grand prize draw for a large stuffed tiger plush and a family pack of four zoo day passes.
The winning names are:
Samkha -- the syllables are the reverse of the cub's grandfather's name, Khasam, a long-time and well-loved zoo resident; means "sacred" in several areas of India.
Vasili -- means "royal or "kingly" in Russian
The young female cub has yet to be named by the generous sponsor who purchased the right at our Tusks & Tails fundraising event.
The cubs are still venturing outside on their own schedule, often early morning or late afternoon. Many visitors have been fortunate enough to see them but it will still be awhile before they are out regularly.
