Request Forgery, in the context of cybersecurity, encompasses various types of attacks where an attacker tricks a user or application into performing unintended actions within a web application. The attacker forges the requests that seem legitimate to the server or client but are actually malicious. This definition encompasses both Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) and Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) attacks, each exploiting the trust a server or client has in the user's browser.
Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF):
A CSRF attack exploits the trust that a web application has in the user's browser, tricking the user into submitting a request that they did not intend. This typically happens without the user's knowledge or consent.
Use Cases: Forcing a user to execute actions like changing email addresses, passwords, or even transferring funds if the user is logged into a banking application.
Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF):
An SSRF attack occurs when an attacker abuses functionality on the server to read or update internal resources. The attacker can supply or modify URLs to which the server will read or submit data.
Use Cases: Accessing internal services within an organization's infrastructure, reading sensitive files from the server, or interacting with internal APIs that are only accessible from the server's network.
Mitigation Techniques:
For CSRF:
Use of Anti-CSRF Tokens: Unique tokens that the server checks to validate the authenticity of the request.
SameSite Cookie Attribute: Restricts how cookies are sent with requests from external sites.
For SSRF:
Whitelisting Allowed Domains: Only allowing the server to make requests to known, safe domains.
Validating User Input: Ensuring URLs or IP addresses supplied by users are validated against a strict set of rules.
