The platypus may be one of the strangest mammals in the world. Not only do these mammals lay eggs (just like all other monotremes) they also have a bird-like bill and they don't have nipples! They don't have teeth either (at least as adults)! The platypus is from Australia and is considered an aquatic mammal: it spends a lot of its time in water. These animals burrow using long claws on their flippered feet. They're a little awkward walking on land, but they get by: they walk on their knuckles! The platypus was nearly extinct 100 years ago, but today they're making a comeback with protections that are in place.

Scientific Name: Ornithorhynchus anatinus
Range: eastern side of Australia, Tasmania (introduced to Kangaroo Island)
Size: 1.5 feet (45.7cm); 3 pounds (1.4kg)
Diet: insects, crustaceans, tadpoles, fish, worms, and more!
Lifespan: 10+ years
