It is said that school lunch was started free of charge for poor children at a private Chuai elementary school in Tsuruoka-town, Yamagata Prefecture in 1889.
School lunch began again on December 24, 1946, despite being suspended during the war due to food shortages.
To commemorate this, January 24 to 30 have been designated as National School Lunch Week. (It is one month late, because many schools are starting winter vacation on December 24.)
National School Lunch Week is a week for children, teachers, parents and local residents to deepen their understanding and interest in the significance and role of school lunch. Various events take place throughout the country, including creating opportunities for children to learn the history of school lunch. School lunch are implemented based on the School Lunch Act and play an important role in fostering children's correct understanding of food and proper judgment.
