Professor Kim Donaghue, from The Children’s Hospital Westmead, is President of the International Society of Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes.
She has an important message for parents of children with type 1 diabetes.
The early evidence out of China and Italy is that there have been no severe cases of COVID-19 among children with type 1 diabetes in either country.
On top of this, children with type 1 diabetes are not at a higher risk of developing COVID-19.
But Professor Donaghue did warn that any illness can increase the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis and that’s why it is very important to stay on top of diabetes management.
