The term sciatica stems from the sciatic nerve, which travels through the hip and comes together in a thick bundle behind the buttock, before continuing down to the legs and feet. Compression of the sciatic nerve causes irritation that interferes with normal nerve conduction and presents as the radiating pain known as Sciatica.
Sciatica has many causes, but usually occurs between the ages of 30 to 50 years old, Commonly caused by another condition such as
Spinal Stenosis,
Degenerative Disc Disease,
Spondylolisthesis,
Arthritis,
Or even Pregnancy.
The most common symptoms of sciatica include:
pain in the buttocks or leg that gets worse with sitting
weakness/numbness, in the leg/foot
hip pain
burning or tingling down the leg
lower back pain
Sciatica typically only affects one side of the body, often originating in the lower back, and then traveling down the leg and stopping at the calf or toes. Pain may increase when sitting, sneezing, or coughing. In severe cases, patients may experience Muscle weakness. In this event, patients should call a Spinal Specialist immediately to rule out a more severe condition. In most cases, Sciatica responds well to conservative treatment while only sometimes requiring surgery. Regardless, seek treatment immediately if you experience symptoms of Sciatica, as nerves may sustain permanent damage if compressed for an extended time.
