TENSIONS IN XINJIANG
18 ethnic Muslim Uighurs have been killed in clashes with police at a traffic checkpoint in a district of the southern city of Kashgar in the Xinjiang region.Police have said the fatalities had allegedly attacked and killed several police officers with knives and bombs before police shot them. The incident comes as the Chinese government has banned fasting in the month Ramadan, causing tension in the region, already considered to have a history of repressive government policies towards the Uighur minority.
MARKET BOMBING
A suicide bomber, around 12 years of age, has killed at least 10 people in an attack at a market in Gujba district in northeast Nigeria. The attack comes a day after another teenage girl killed about 20 people at a bus station in Maiduguri, Borno state. Both attacks are suspected to have been carried out by Boko Haram, which has recently lost ground in the country.
EU ASYLUM RULE SUSPENDED
Hungary has announced it will no longer allow asylum seekers to reenter the country after they have travelled to other EU member states. The government has stated this suspension of this EU rule was done due to the country being overwhelmed by “illegal immigration.” This comes just days after the nation announced the construction of a 4 metre-high wall along the Hungarian-Serbian border aimed to keep immigrants out of the country.
HEAT WAVE EMERGENCY
Pakistani official have declared a state of emergency after a heat wave has killed nearly 700 in Karachi. On June 20th, temperatures reached a 15-year record high of nearly 45 degrees Celsius. Pakistan's Meteorological Department said it expects the heatwave to subside in next few days. The high temperatures come at a time when Pakistan’s electricity companies have been using frequent and planned power outages to control increased electricity demands.
