The Third Temple, also known as the ‘Third House of the Sanctum’, refers to a hypothetical rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem. It would succeed Solomon’s Temple and the Second Temple, both of which were destroyed during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem in c. 587 BCE and the Roman siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE respectively. Since 1987, the Temple Movement has been preparing for the rebuilding of the Third Temple. Orthodox Jews, who revived the Sanhedrin, the religious body that supervised the halachic (legal) issues related to the Temple, intend to see it rebuilt in a proper way. They believe the world’s redemption can only take place once the Temple is rebuilt. The Temple Institute already houses the three most important items for the new Temple, which have been produced precisely in accordance with the biblical specifications: the golden altar of incense, showbread table, and the Temple menorah made of 24-carat gold.
