On Thursday, May 27, 2021, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation presented catastrophically injured USMC Veteran Sgt. Aaron Alonso and his daughter with a specially adapted mortgage-free smart home in New Jersey in observance of Memorial Day. On February 8, 2014, Sgt. Alonso was on his third deployment to Afghanistan when he triggered an IED while on patrol. He sustained critical injuries and lost both of his legs in the blast. Sgt. Alonso also suffered hip disarticulation and had shrapnel wounds throughout his body.
Sgt. Alonso vividly remembers watching the Twin Towers fall live on TV when he was in school. The terrorist attacks on 9/11 is what drove him to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. This smart home is completely accessible and his home is built with features and technology that will help him live more independently; Sgt. Alonso’s home features additions like wider hallways and doorways and a stove that can be adjusted to wheelchair height. Tunnel to Towers’ mission is to honor the sacrifices of our heroic military service members and first responders who have made supreme sacrifices in the line of duty by risking life and limb in protecting our communities and our country.
Tunnel to Towers developed the In the Line of Duty Program which provides mortgage-free smart homes to our nation’s catastrophically injured veterans and first responders that are specially modified for their mobility needs, as well as mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and Fallen First Responder families with young children.
