Today I am here to talk about a super-hot topic which is the keto diet and kidney disease. So, we are gonna talk about this whole week and we have a lot of great tidbits for you.
Ketogenic diets are all the rage right now. Done wrong they can seriously damage your kidneys (promise - I hear it every week!). Done right, they may be useful. This week we're spending some time to talk about who a ketogenic diet may be helpful for and the safest way to apply this therapy.
0:00 Ketogenic Diet and Kidney Disease
In this video, I’ll share with you what is ketogenic diet plan and why a ketogenic diet is an interest of kidney disease? What is in a ketogenic diet plan and who should not use a ketogenic diet.
1:15 What Is Ketogenic Diet Plan?
The ketogenic diet is a diet that forces the body to use fat instead of glucose (from carbs) as its energy source.
1:52 Why ketogenic diet is interest of kidney disease?
Ketogenic diets are generally not encouraged for early-stage kidney disease because, if done incorrectly can have too much protein, too much dairy, and not enough high-quality vegetables. However recent research has shown that for some people, especially those with PKD, the keto diet may be helpful.
3:43 Who should not use a ketogenic diet?
First off, for anyone with kidney disease, if you are going to follow a ketogenic diet it is VERY important that you keep it plant-focused. Too often people think they are following a "ketogenic" diet when really they are just following a high fat, high protein, low carb diet. It's totally different. We primarily use ketogenic diets for clients with PKD.
5:01 Ketogenic Diet – Summary
So, as a recap, a ketogenic diet is where you are using fat instead of glucose as your energy source. There may be some benefits for people with polycystic kidney disease but we believe that a classic ketogenic diet is not a great place for anyone with kidney disease. It should be a plant-focused ketogenic diet which is what we use. And who should not use a ketogenic diet? If you are going to do it on your own just be careful, watch your numbers carefully but I really think that a ketogenic diet for kidney disease needs to be with a professional because it has to really plant heavy and it’s pretty easy to get some imbalances if you’re not exactly sure what to do.
