This video will explain how the United States Presidential Election of 2016 works, in less than 60 seconds.
Also, this video is the pilot episode of a new series named 'Explained In 60 Seconds', where a complicated (and sometimes controversial) topic would be explained in 60 seconds.
SCRIPT:
With the 2016 U.S Presidential Election coming up in a few weeks, it would be a good idea to explain how the election works.
On 8 November 2016, the United States will be hosting an election to decide its next President. This is because under the Constitution, the current President Barack Obama is ineligible for a third term, meaning that the country will have a new president on Inauguration Day: 20 January 2017
Whilst there are many other candidates running for President this year, the two main candidates for 2016 are Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party, and Donald Trump for the Republican Party. Either candidate will have an historical legacy for them. If elected, Clinton will be the first female president of the United States, and Trump would become the oldest president to enter office.
Unlike other countries in the world, the United States is the only country to use an ‘electoral college’ voting system. Essentially, each state has a set number of electoral votes, and out of 538 possible votes, a candidate needs 270 to become the President of one of, if not the most influential nation in the world.
