An ankle brachial index (ABI) test is a non-invasive diagnostic tool used to assess the circulation in the legs and arms. It is used to evaluate peripheral arterial disease (PAD), a condition in which there is reduced blood flow to the limbs due to narrowing or blockage of the arteries.
During the test, blood pressure measurements are taken at the ankles and arms using an inflatable cuff and a Doppler ultrasound device. The pressure in the ankle is divided by the pressure in the arm to determine the ankle brachial index. The value obtained helps to assess the severity of arterial blockages or restrictions.
