George Szell offers the most telling example of the ability of a musical genius to create a lasting legacy. The Cleveland Orchestra was his creation, and it has sustained the reputation and standards that he demanded. His recorded legacy is the richest of anyone's in fundamental music values: clean rhythm, transparent textures, superbly contoured dynamics, superior balances--and because of these basic virtues his interpretations of the German standard repertoire (especially) remain virtually unsurpassed.
