Romanian conductor and famed nutcase Sergiu Celibidache didn't believe in recordings, which didn't stop his family and the record labels from capitalizing on his legacy after his death in 1996. Famous for his excruciatingly slow tempos, much of the credit for his late success belongs to the Munich Philharmonic, which had the patience and fortitude to put up with him and deliver the results he demanded. Occasionally the outcome was so revelatory that it probably justified the time and preparation that went into it. Most of the time, though, the results were simply boring.
