STORYLINE
People in Berlin on Friday began celebrating the Chinese New Year with a fireworks display and an array of performances at Berlin Central Station.
The new year marks the Year of the Ox, or buffalo, a symbol of prosperity, fortitude and hard work.
It is one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac.
The Chinese lunar year begins on Monday, and the special cultural programme will run from Friday until Monday, showcasing Chinese music, dance and art.
The event was co-organised by the Chinese Embassy in Berlin and the German rail company Deutsche Bahn.
Ma Canrong, China's ambassador to Germany attended the festivities at Berlin central station on Friday.
The Year of the Rat was celebrated in 2008.
