How do I find a matching sodium vapor lamp? What HID light should I choose? In this episode of Spec. Sense, you'll learn how to choose a replacement HID lamp. Vance explains how HIDs work, what the ballast does, and why its important to find the right match.
High intensity discharge lamps are named after the types of gas used: high pressure sodium (HPS), low pressure sodium (LPS), mercury vapor (MV), metal halide (MH). Probe start metal halide and pulse start metal halide are not interchangeable.
HIDs of different types and wattage have different power requirements and need to be matched to their specific ballast to operate. To easily match use the ANSI code. Alternative you can match the type, wattage and measure the shape and size of the lamp.
HIDs are used in streetlamps, parking lots, arenas, warehouses. There are LED retrofits available which can help save energy. A lot of these LEDs lamps require a bypass of the ballast, capacitor and starter.
