Welcome to The Dish, where I share 2 minute video tips to help you cook better food. In this video I share how to perfectly salt your food.
Listen, while this video will give you useful information, watching YouTube videos is not the way to get better at cooking.
👆
**READ THAT AGAIN. **
Following a pre-recorded video as you learn a new skill is just inherently flawed.
You’re trying to understand at your own pace, while having to start, stop, pause and rewind every few minutes. You’ll listen to the instructions, but then forget one of the steps and have to replay it. Or worse, the cook in the video does a step that isn’t on camera and you feel lost and frustrated. 😤
Here’s the thing... information gathering and skill building are not the same thing. You can gather tons of information in a video without developing a skill of any kind.
YouTube videos and recipes help you gather information, but they aren’t designed to help you build your skills.
Example - Imagine trying to learn to read from only watching videos of a teacher, instead of being in school with a teacher there to respond to your learning style and needs.
And, aside from learning, a video doesn’t hold you accountable.
You watch the video, and get excited about the content. Then you save it somewhere for “later.” But, more than likely you never get back to it and don’t do anything with the information you gathered.
Now what would it look like if you were *actually* seated at your dining table enjoying those meals from the videos, that had you salivating and excited?
Think of how it would feel if you could look at the joy on your loved ones' faces as they look at the meal you made. And, you feel confident and proud because you absolutely know the food is excellent and about to knock their socks off.
What if gourmet didn’t have to mean complicated, time-consuming cooking, or a $200 restaurant tab?
You may think you could get there if you “try a couple new recipes” or “get myself organized so I can try all the recipes I’ve got.”
Well, can I be really honest with you...that’s a belief that just isn’t true...And to be even more honest, it keeps a TON of people STUCK.
But let me explain why it isn’t true. One video or recipe will teach you what to do, but not why you do it. That’s the skill building you need to be able to improvise and use what you have. That requires mastering the tastes and techniques that unpin a meal and cuisine.
This is also the one thing I cover inside my Taste & Technique cooking program.
