An introductory radiation safety training video focusing on the nature of ionizing radiation plus the safety methods and techniques used to keep occupational radiation doses to individuals as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) and to minimize the potential for accidental exposures. The average radiation worker's occupational dosage exposure is compared to normal naturally occurring background radiation and that of non-radiation workers and is put in perspective. Topics included in the discussion are: · The nature and characteristics of ionizing radiation · Radioactivity and half-life · Natural and man-made sources of radiation · Radiation quantities and units · Internal and external exposures · Irradiation and contamination · Use of time, distance and shielding · Radiation monitoring · Contamination control This video is ideal for training individuals whose potential for exposure is such that an extensive radiation safety training program is not required. However, additional training will be required regarding the potential radiation hazards associated with the individual's specific work tasks, the employer's radiation safety program, and the job related environment. This program will serve as a good introduction to radiation safety for all workers, both radiation and non-radiation staff, who work near radioactive sources.
