King Louis was imprisoned and later had to pay a hefty ransom for his release. During the Seventh Crusade from 1248 to 1254, European Crusaders were so resource and cash-strapped that they resorted to melting down precious gold and silver items, which were looted from Muslim territories, just to mint more coins for paying their soldiers.
