In this episode of Revolution Health Radio (RHR) we discuss "Is it Possible to Get Off Thyroid Medication?" As is often the case, when we look at a question like this, it becomes a lot more complex and it may seem initially, on the surface. Let’s tackle issues number two through four first, because they’re actually going to inform the answer to the first question, which is, is it possible to get off thyroid medication? In terms of diagnosing Hashimoto’s, it’s actually not quite as straightforward as just doing an antibody test and seeing what the results are. I wish it were. It would make my life a lot easier, for sure. But the first-line test you do, typically what I do, is for antibodies. By antibodies, I mean thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies, these are the two antibodies that tend to be elevated in Hashimoto’s. Thyroperoxidase is elevated a lot more often than thyroglobulin. It’s more sensitive to Hashimoto’s. It’s not more specific. So you’ll tend to see it elevated more frequently.
