Korina Pateli-Bell, representant of FairLife Lung Cancer Care was honored to have been invited by Helena Linardou and Arsela Prelaj to speak about the benefits of #ArtificialIntelligence (AI) in Oncology at the recent event organized by Metropolitan Hospital and Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, endorsed by #IASLC. Insights were shared on how AI can revolutionize cancer care, especially for oncology patients, in my capacity as the Founder and President of FairLife Lung Cancer Care.
It was highlighted how AI's integration into oncology can address significant challenges such as misdiagnosis, delayed treatments, and limited access to innovative therapies. Enhanced diagnostic accuracy, prediction of treatment responses, and facilitation of personalized treatment plans through AI were discussed, demonstrating the promise AI holds in improving patient outcomes.
A deeply personal and hypothetical scenario involving my late husband, Simon, was shared to illustrate the potential impact of AI. In July 2019, Simon experienced persistent coughing and was initially misdiagnosed with a simple infection, leading to a significant delay in the accurate diagnosis of adenocarcinoma, which affected his treatment options and prognosis. The COVID-19 pandemic further restricted his access to potentially life-saving treatments in the #USA.
In the hypothetical scenario, #AI diagnostic tools could have comprehensively analyzed Simon’s initial symptoms and health records, detecting patterns indicative of malignancy and prompting further investigation. AI systems in radiology could have identified early signs of lung cancer in his X-rays or CT scans, leading to an earlier and more accurate diagnosis, allowing for prompt and potentially more effective intervention.
Upon diagnosis, AI could have analyzed Simon’s tumor genome to identify specific mutations and biomarkers, enabling a personalized treatment plan tailored to his cancer’s genetic profile. This targeted treatment strategy could have slowed the disease's progression and improved his quality of life.
AI-powered telemedicine platforms could have enabled Simon to consult with top oncologists worldwide, managing his treatment remotely and efficiently. This would have allowed access to clinical trial treatments, overcoming logistical and bureaucratic hurdles, even during the pandemic.
Moreover, AI-driven chatbots and virtual assistants could have provided 24/7 support, answering questions about his condition and treatment options, easing the emotional and logistical burdens on our family.
At FAIRLIFE, the dedication to transforming lung cancer care through education, support, and global collaboration was emphasized. The significant enhancement of the quality of life for cancer patients and their families through AI, combined with the empathy and compassion of healthcare professionals, was underscored.
