Thresher vs. Combine: Which is the Best Option for Wheat Farmers? || Crop Craze
While initial investment costs for a combine harvester may be higher than a thresher, the long-term profitability and efficiency benefits typically outweigh the initial investment.
Wheat crop is harvested from mid of April to mid of May throughout Punjab province. It is harvested manually or with the help of reapers in case of short scale. Most of crop is harvested with the help of combined harvesters. Only 10-15% manually or reaper harvested crop is threshed with the help of threshers. This year, reaper share may increase due to severe demand of wheat bhosa. Even then lion share of wheat crop is likely to be harvested through the combined harvesters. We have compared the expenses of wheat harvesting in this video.
If it is harvested manually, labour demands 5-6 maunds per acre. Threshing charges are Rs 4000 or 2.5 maunds per acre. Reaper charges are Rs 1000, binding and heap formation involves Rs 2500 and thresher Charges account for Rs 4000. In this way Rs 12000 are involved but wheat bhosa is saved. Thresher is better option for small farmers.
On the other hand, combined harvesters charges are 3.5-4 thousand. Left over straw after the combined harvester is converted into useful straw with straw chopper @ Rs 8000 per acre. The price of straw equalizes the total harvesting expenses. Combined harvester is better option for big farmers
