Minimally invasive spine surgery differs from conventional spine surgery in a number of ways. One of the main differences is that we're able to do traditional spine surgeries through smaller incisions. We're able to do this through using different instruments such as microscopes and tubular retractors. This results in smaller incisions, decreased soft tissue destruction and damage, which leads to increased benefits for the patient, namely being decreased hospital stay if they are staying in the hospital. Better outcomes for the patients, decrease infection rate and quicker return to work.
The good thing about minimally invasive spine surgery is that can be done in a number of different settings. It can be done at an outpatient surgery center where you can go home the same day or it can be done in a hospital setting where a patient can stay overnight or for two days if necessary. In choosing where the best location for a patient to have a surgery is, it's really patient dependent. We look at a number of different factors looking at their age, medical comorbidities, and also the type of surgery that is going to be performed and would be the best for the patient. One of the things that's really important to remember when considering conventional surgery versus minimally invasive surgery is the following. One can do conventional surgery to treat every spine condition that is out there, but the important thing though is that minimally invasive spine surgery can really only be treating effectively a number of different conditions, most of which has to do with Radiculopathy or sciatic type pain or pain that shoots down the arm. Those are the most reliable and effective means by which minimally invasive spine surgery can help get our patients back to what they enjoy doing. Another important thing to consider when trying to weigh whether having minimally invasive spine surgery versus conventional spinal surgery is the surgeon that you're choosing. The key for this is that you can have an honest conversation with your surgeon about what might be the best surgery for you, whether you'd be a great candidate for a minimally invasive spine surgery, which could be done at one of our two outpatient surgery centers, or if your surgery might be performed much more effectively in a hospital setting.
Most of the conditions that can be treated with minimally invasive spine surgery are the same conditions that can be treated with conventional spine surgery. Again, just with smaller incisions. These common conditions can involve disc herniations in the lumbar or in the cervical spine, the neck or the low back causing sciatic type pain or shooting pain down the arm. Other common conditions which can be treated and minimally invasively involve spinal stenosis, which is narrowing of the spinal canal and also another condition called spondylolisthesis, where two bones are moved and are moving inappropriately along each other and can be stabilized with minimally invasive.
