The viral filmmaker Casey Neistat has snowboarded in the Pyrenees, in Italy, in Aspen, Colorado and the mountains of Vermont. On Saturday he spent the day snowboarding the city streets, towed on a line like water skis, behind a Jeep Wrangler.
“I think yesterday’s urban conditions were on par,” with the best he’s ever boarded, he said.
It is set to the tune of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.”
“When you’re out West you’ve got trees to avoid and you’ve got rocks to jump off of,” Mr. Neistat said. “Here, you have snow plows to avoid and snowbanks and sports cars to jump off of,” he added. “The consequences of falling might be a little higher in New York City.”
Neistat runs a technology company and has earned substantial fame as a video blogger. (He was behind a recent viral video of Aladdin gliding around the city on a magic carpet, and his work has previously appeared in The Times.)
His helpers this time were his brother Dean, 32, who drove, and another friend, Jesse Wellens, who filmed.
At one point, Oscar Boyson, shoots alongside him on skis, doing ever more daring tricks, as befits someone who at 14 took the Eastern Conference championship for combined freestyle skiing.
A second Youtube video showing how the first one was made reveals how the group used a drone and rehearsed some stunts. It also shows the group receiving news that city and state officials had instituted a travel ban at 2:30 p.m. and scrambling to complete their shoot.
But the group continued to drive around the city even after the travel ban went into effect. The video begins with a news clip of Mayor Bill de Blasio warning drivers off the street, and ends with the group being pulled over by police.
The NYPD officer, whose face is obscured, appears to let the group go without a hitch. “Someone complained about you, so we’re just going to act like we’re talking to you.”
“You guys are awesome,” Mr. Neistat replies in the video.
The police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
