Zoonotic diseases may not impact shelter animals as frequently as other more common diseases such as parvovirus, but when they do the ramifications can be huge. Consider that the recent outbreak of Campylobacter associated with puppies in pet stores could just as easily have happened in a shelter. This presentation by Dr Jeanette O'Quin discusses the prevention, recognition and management of a few zoonotic diseases that might walk into the shelter on four paws or two feet, including Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., Brucella canis, leptospirosis and more. This presentation was recorded at the 2018 ASPCA-Maddie’s Cornell Shelter Medicine Conference.
