IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination) technique is helpful for couples facing mild male infertility of unexplained infertility problems.
In male, IUI is preferred in case of ejaculation problem, erectile dysfunction, low sperm count, low sperm motility and poor morphology. In females, IUI technique can aid in factors like poor cervical mucus, endometriosis and intercourse problems. Apart from these, a situation of unexplained fertility where reports of both partners come normal and cause of infertility is not determine, IUI technique is commonly preferred.
Before beginning IUI, 3 basic tests are required. In females, transvaginal sonography is done to determine egg count, uterine abnormalities and Endometrium. Another HSG test is done to check the opening of fallopian tubes.
In males, semen analysis is done from retrieved semen sample. 5-10 million / ml sperms with good morphology are required for IUI procedure.
IUI process begins with a sonography of female partner to know number of eggs and she is put on certain medication, either oral or injection, to stimulate ovaries for releasing eggs. A trigger shot is given for ovulation to occur due to which the egg is released from ovary to fallopian tube.
In the meanwhile, semen sample is retrieved from male partner and washed to select better quality sperms. These selected sperms are inserted with the help of a thin catheter in the middle part of part of uterine cavity. This process reduces the distance for the sperms to travel to the fallopian tube. As the sperm reaches the fallopian tube, it fertilizes the egg to develop embryo and the embryo remains in the fallopian tube for next few days after which it implants itself in the uterus and pregnancy begins.
If a couple had undergone 3-4 IUI cycles and didn’t get any success, they should go for IVF process. IVF has significantly higher chances of success than IUI.
