Back at the Woodland Mills hm126 sawmill again. Today I will be trying out my first attempt at quarter sawing. I have a couple cherry logs at the mill and even though cherry is not very commonly quarter sawed, i figured i would give it a try anyway.
Quarter sawed lumber is defined as having the annular growth rings intersect the face of the board at between a 60 and 90 degree angle. Oak and Maple are most commonly used in quarter sawing, but since i do not have any of that on hand i decided to use cherry instead.
Quarter sawed lumber gives the grain a different look in the board and it is also stronger and less prone to cupping. The negative aspect of it is that it produces more waste and is more expensive to buy.
There is lots to learn in the world of a new sawyer and this is just one more thing I was anxious to try.
As always
thanks for watching
Chris
