At the end of February 2022, the Tweed Valley, in Northern NSW Australia, suffered it worst flooding on record. Murwillumbah is the major town for the area and it in turn, is surrounded by various small country villages. One of these villages, is “Tyalgum”
Wikipedia states “Tyalgum is a rural village located in north-eastern New South Wales, Australia. Located approximately 18 minutes from Murwillumbah, 45 minutes from the Gold Coast, Queensland, and two hours from Brisbane. At the 2011 census, Tyalgum had a population of 503 people.”
There are a couple of ways into Tyalgum from Murwillumbah. The major road used by most people (And the most convenient direct route into Tyalgum) was the “Tyalgum Road” which runs directly west from outside Murwillumbah to Tyalgum village.
Unfortunately, the February 2022 floods caused major landslips throughout the Tweed Valley and Tyalgum Road was a major casualty. To this day is has made Tyalgum Road impassable for all traffic. And it will take many months (or possibly years), until Tyalgum Road is once more open to all.
The only other “convenient” way into Tyalgum now, is by travelling west from Murwillumbah to the village of Chillingham and then south along Zara/ Limpinwood Road, to Tyalgum. This has approximately doubled the travelling time from Murwillumbah to Tyalgum.
Zara Road was in bad shape before the floods, but thanks to the recent major road works, the road has now been dramatically improved. It still requires more ongoing repair works, but what has been fixed so far is impressive to see!
So, my video shows what Zara Road is like to ride / drive these days. The video also shows how bad the landslip on Tyalgum Road is. It of course also shows the village of Tyalgum and some of the beautiful, majestic countryside nearby.
It’s well worth the ride or drive to Tyalgum, you won’t be disappointed, and the local businesses, in Tyalgum, need all the support they can get, if this village is to continue to thrive in the future!
