Black Lagoon and Cowboy Bebop are two cult classic anime, each with their share of amazing characters and an oasis of depth each. Normally, we’d focus on the cast like Rock and Revy, or Spike, but today let's review two other characters, Dutch and Jet, and see just what would happen if these two fighters went at it…
Black Lagoon is an unmatched anime from 2006, exploring the dark frontier of a gritty world. Despite the sometimes outlandish action, this world and its characters, Revy, Rock, Dutch, Balalaika, Roberta, and even more, are all some of the most realistic to ever be seen. Author Rei Hiroe trained real history into many of them, and even those without have an extreme amount of depth. Dutch, our focus today, takes more of a backseat role for sure, but his interactions with Shane Caxton, his attitude towards his work, and the mystery behind him offers an interesting character we’ll have to take a closer look at…
Cowboy Bebop is *the* anime for many (recently getting a Netflix live action adaptation), introducing an entire generation to the medium in the late 90’s. Following the cool-guy-persona Spike Spiegel, his grizzled veteran partner Jet Black, femme fatale Faye Valentine, and hacker Radical Edward, the team travels around the solar system as bounty hunters. Constantly broke, they hope to change their bad fortune, while each respectively avoiding, running from, or ignoring their dark and troubled pasts. Jet’s story becomes one of learning from his mistakes and passing that wisdom onto others, and it creates a very meaningful addition to the classic series.
