This weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix has been officially cancelled due to severe flooding in the region, with organisers accepting it would be irresponsible to hold such a big event while local community and emergency services are stretched.
The Imola circuit itself is not expected to be waterlogged but teams are already behind on setting up the paddock after F1 personnel were evacuated on Tuesday and asked not to come back on Wednesday. And with local access roads and bridges shut, and hotels flooded, a decision needed to be taken early so that an estimated 120,000 people could avoid travelling to an already overburdened area.
Tuesday's evacuation was described as precautionary while authorities continued to monitor the situation on what is traditionally a quiet day during race weeks, mainly used for set-up of motor homes and garages and hospitality units.
