Unfortunately, scoliosis affects all ages from babies to the elderly and every age in between. But the most common form of scoliosis, the one most often thought about, is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This is when scoliosis is diagnosed between the ages of 10 and 18 years. 'Idiopathic' means an unknown cause, indicating that the majority of scoliosis cases have no single known cause. The person with scoliosis has no other health conditions; they simply have scoliosis.
Scoliosis involves the development of a three-dimensional, unnatural sideways spinal curvature. The primary symptom of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is postural deviation. This can manifest as asymmetry in the shoulders, hips, waist, and arm length, resulting in differences in the way they stand and how clothes fit properly. Such postural deviation is typically the first sign. The severity of postural misalignment can vary from case to case but often leads to a diagnosis.
The diagnosis of scoliosis in teens typically begins with a physical examination. Healthcare professionals notice postural misalignment, which may include bending forward, rib arching, rib deformities, shoulder asymmetry, waist asymmetry, and more. In most cases, patients are recommended to undergo an X-ray to confirm the condition. It's essential to understand that any noticeable postural asymmetry in a child or teen should not be dismissed as normal. It should be evaluated by a doctor, possibly with an X-ray, to determine the cause.
Once the X-ray is taken, if a curvature is present, healthcare providers use something called a Cobb angle to measure the X-ray and determine the severity of the scoliosis. The Cobb angle measurement helps classify the condition as mild, moderate, severe, or very severe, which, in turn, helps determine the appropriate treatment for scoliosis.
Fact one: You don't have to wait and see; the number one recommendation for teen scoliosis cases is often nothing. Watching and waiting can lead to valuable time loss as the curve worsens, making treatment less effective.
There are two main treatment options: traditional and conservative. Traditional approaches often do nothing until scoliosis is severe, wasting valuable time and sometimes leading to surgery. Conservative treatments, on the other hand, can offer increased flexibility, strength, and function without limiting future career or family plans.
Fact two: Scoliosis surgery can weaken the spine and impose life restrictions, especially for physically demanding careers. Conservative treatments, however, can improve future options and don't affect a female's ability to get pregnant or safely deliver children.
Fact three: Scoliosis treatment isn't limited to surgery; conservative options integrate various treatments like chiropractic care, therapy, rehabilitation, and corrective bracing. These approaches provide a fuller life at a fraction of the cost compared to surgery.
Fact four: Early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes. Screening for scoliosis through posture analysis is crucial. Treating smaller curves early, before they become severe, is more effective, especially during growth stages.
Treating scoliosis closer to the diagnosis typically leads to greater treatment success and reduces the likelihood of surgical intervention. At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we've treated teens with scoliosis for over 20 years, achieving remarkable results without surgery.
