In Catalonia’s nativity scenes, right next to baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, an extraordinary (defecatory) figure graces the manger. With his pants around his ankles, the tiny figurine can be found squatting and … well … pooping. Legend has it that in the 18th century, farmers defecated onto their land in order to fertilize the soil. Today, the tradition lives on in the form of the figurines, known as “caganers.” If you’re looking to add a pooping man to your own holiday celebrations, brothers Sergi and Marc Alos are your guys. They’ve made a booming business across Catalonia keeping the centuries old tradition alive.
