PCL or Pilot Controlled Lighting is a system that allows pilots to control the lighting of an airport(Runway edge lights, Approach lights, Taxi lights).
If you are flying through uncontrolled/ non towered airports during night and you are desperately looking for the airport in pitch dark environment, you can magically make the airport light up in bright lights using your radio transmission button and get to the ground safe and sound!
How it works:
Tune into the Airports CTAF(common traffic advisory frequency)and
Press the radio transmission 7 times for High Intensity Runway Lights(HIRL)
or 5 times for Medium Intensity(MIRL)
or 3 times for Low Intensity(LIRL)
Within 5 seconds.
The lights stay on for 15 minutes starting from the first transmission. They turn off after 15 mins to save electricity.
