Akhand Jyoti, an eye hospital in Bihar, one of India’s poorest states, is using football to reach out to girls in impoverished villages, and offering them fully-paid education.
Through the Football to Eyeball programme, rural girls have a chance to leave communities that prevent females from realising their potential.
Some 150 girls will graduate as optometrists, and find jobs at the hospital. The programme has become so popular that there is a waiting list of 700 girls. And it keeps growing, as word spreads across Bihar.
The aim is to eradicate curable blindness by 2022 in Bihar, and in the process allow for gender equality to take root.
